In November of 2003, I was attacked by a man as I was getting
off the city bus. He took my purse and broke my arm and punched
out my teeth. Since then, I have physically recovered and I
use my art to help with the emotional healing. I’ve always
done art, but since my accident, I have become more active in
the arts. I feel calm when I am painting and it helps me take
my mind off of the scary feelings I still have about what happened.
It was a hard time, but I am doing well now. I have been at
my job at Abbott Northwestern Hospital working for Xerox for
many years and have been doing great lately. I did have some
trouble at work after my accident. I am also doing well with
my SILS program (semi-independent living skills, for adults
with disabilities), and received my 20 years of participation
award in February! I want to keep doing art because it makes
me feel good, and people feel good when they see my art. I want
people with different abilities to be recognized as part of
the art community, too, and I am working to make that happen!
