Child abuse is a crime that was rarely reported in the 1950s and 1960s. And yet, the abuse of a child remains a crime, even if unreported or unprosecuted. The physical scars may heal, but the damage to the self requires years of healing. In the absence of intervention, the only avenue open to healing is through art or spirituality. For me, both were a saving grace. The majority of these poems were written between 2005 and 2007 as part of a series I am writing on being a child in foster care.
