This photo essay represents an important aspect in my efforts to heal from the murder of my daughter, Marlys Ann Wohlenhaus, in May 1979, and the struggle for so many years to identify the murderer. He was convicted of first degree murder in 1998 and is serving the first of six consecutive life sentences.
I have had a bond with dogs and other pets all my life. My prize Saint Bernard, Patience, was in my home when my daughter was attacked. I found Patience shut up in an upstairs bedroom, and I believe she was put there before Marlys came home and was attacked by the killer.
The essays here are taken from a column my husband and I write for the Cambridge Star titled “The Path to Healing.” I have dedicated my life to helping others heal from tragedy, and sometimes use a dog or other companion to illustrate how we can find our way on that path.
The photographs are of our Papillion ”Welcome Dream Come True.” The combination of words and pictures is a different approach to be a crime victim. For me, it has been effective.
