Art of Recovery
Seventh Annual Call for Entries
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Justice Programs and the
Minnesota State Arts Board invite entries for an art exhibition to heighten
public awareness about crime victims and their rights and to commemorate Crime
Victims’ Rights Week, April 18-24, 2010.
The seventh annual Art of Recovery exhibition will open Friday, April 16,
2010, and remain on display in the Arts Board office gallery until Wednesday,
June 30, 2010. The visual arts exhibition will be part of the Saint Paul
Art Crawl on April 23-25, 2010. Selected literary artists will be invited to
participate in a reading of their written work at the Arts Board on Sunday,
April 25, 2010.
After the show ends on June 30, the exhibition will travel to
two other Minnesota communities in late 2010, with exhibition locations to
be determined. In addition, the Arts Board will create an online gallery of
all the works included in the exhibition, both literary and visual.
Who may enter?
Minnesotans who have been victims or survivors of crime and have expressed their experiences through the arts are invited to submit work. Our hope is that those who have used artwork as a way to express their experience with crime will submit work, whether or not they consider themselves to be “artists.” We encourage anyone who has used the arts to respond, explore, express or heal to enter.
Submitted work may include literature (poetry, short stories, or essays), or visual arts (drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fabric/textiles, photographs, mixed media, or film/video).
Individuals who have participated in previous Art of Recovery exhibitions may enter. However, work that has been included in previous Art of Recovery exhibitions will not be accepted.

How are entries considered?
We ask that you write a brief written narrative (up to 500 words) that describes
the visual or literary artwork samples you have submitted, and describes how
the work or the process of creating it relates to your experience as a victim
or a survivor of crime. The narrative will give the selection committee a sense
of how your artwork may fit with the Art of Recovery exhibition. If your work
is selected for the exhibition, the narrative will be displayed along with your
artwork. If you wish to remain anonymous, you may request this.
After receiving the entries, a committee reviews the work and chooses artwork
that represents a diverse selection of experiences and artistic mediums.
