The Duluth Art Institute (DAI), one of the oldest arts organizations in the state, serves northeast Minnesota, providing access to high-quality arts education for artists and the community, as well as professional spaces to exhibit rotating artwork. The nonprofit organization advocates for artists and explores ways to provide arts experiences to enrich shared social and civic life.
The selected works were each submitted by the artists for the Duluth Art Institute Annual Member Show. This annual event is a community favorite. The show highlights the best of members' work.
Born and raised in the Upper Midwest, Shawna Gilmore draws deep from the winter-forged well of her overactive imagination. Her narrative, vintage-infused paintings explore many topics such as childhood, animals, nature, patterns, and fairytales, among others. Gilmore's Faith Holding Hope was awarded People's Choice this year in DAI's member show.
Ann Price, a visual artist, art educator, and art therapist, recently retired after 20 years of teaching art in the Duluth public schools. She is the 2019 DAI volunteer of the year. Her attention is always on drawing and graphite, working both abstractly and realistically. Price uses collage to unveil the power of wisdom as a personal guide into life's journey.
