Ceramic artist and educator Sean Scott, who operates Pomme de Terre Pottery near Battle Lake, has facilitated many art sessions. As part of Artful Afternoons, a joint program between the Kaddatz Gallery and Lake Region Arts Council, Scott joined residents in nursing home facilities and senior centers to give residents the opportunity to participate in and enjoy the arts. Often seniors face challenges in accessing or participating in art opportunities due to age-related health or mobility difficulties.

As part of Artful Afternoons, Scott threw plates on a pottery wheel while listening to and engaging in storytelling with seniors. Residents painted these newly created plates, and Scott fired them back at his studio and returned the final art pieces for residents to enjoy. Sometimes residents and Scott would all come together in a collaborative project, such as painting a large vase.

The Legacy Amendment has been essential in helping arts organizations like the Kaddatz Gallery to provide programs like these, affording organizations and artists the opportunity to think, explore, and offer new and innovative programming to enrich communities and lives around the state.

Featured in this exhibit is a casserole created by Sean Scott, representative of his work, and a photograph of an Artful Afternoon at Broen Home in Fergus Falls.
