Launched in 2010, Veterans for the Arts introduced combat veterans to the power of the arts through community–based programs in a variety of art forms. With the support of an Arts Learning grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, Veterans in the Arts collaborated with three arts centers, including Northern Clay Center.
For three months, a group of veterans enrolled in weekly studio classes under the guidance of a teacher, who was an Iraq War veteran. More than learning the basics of potters' wheels and kilns, veterans learned the power of art in making connections, providing meaning, and in healing.
Northern Clay Arts continues to provide this meaningful opportunities to participate in ceramic making for children and adults at all skill levels. The ceramic pieces in the exhibit were part of ART@HAND, a program designed to provide exposure to ceramic arts for Minnesotans age 55+. Recreational therapists have reported a variety of positive outcomes in working with Northern Clay Center's ART@HAND program, such as participants demonstrating improved cognition and happiness, increased sense of community, decreased physical signs of stress, improved memory and recall, among other benefits.
