Spearheaded by Project FINE, the city of Winona, together with Project FINE and local agencies, have been taking action to create an inclusive community. The nonprofit organization helps refugees and new immigrants transition into the southern Minnesota region by providing culturally appropriate services, building bridges across cultures, and increasing understanding among residents to integrate new members into the community.

Arts and culture make significant and necessary contributions to the well-being of communities, serving as a tool to engage communities in various levels of change. The arts bring people together across demographic, economic, and social lines.

Through the support of a Folk and Traditional Arts grant, Project FINE held workshops in collaboration with local Hmong artists, who shared their talents and traditional art forms. The workshops included batik, a wax resist-dye technique on textile; basket weaving; and qeej playing, a sacred Hmong wind instrument.

This batik fabric pillow is an example of the work created during one of the workshops. Participants created their own pieces using traditional methods. Local Hmong artists served as teachers and the Winona community learned more about Hmong culture and traditional art forms.
