Summer camp becomes a normal childhood experience for those whose lives are anything but normal. Camp Heartland is a beacon of hope for children across the country battling illness and discrimination. Their camps are geared for kids who face stigmatizing circumstances. In a serene location near Willow River, the camp provides a welcoming, bully-free environment where children, youth, and young adults can feel completely accepted for who they are–often for the first time in their lives.
Serving underserved populations, One Heartland partners with several agencies, including the housing services People Serving People and Simpson House. Approximately 80 percent of the 500 youth who attend the camps live at or below poverty level.
Through the support of an East Central Regional Arts Council grant, One Heartland offered expression therapy as part of their summer programming. Expression therapy uses forms of creative expression such as art and music to help individuals explore and transform difficult emotional and medical conditions. Children and youth feel a sense of normalcy without judgment. Featured in the exhibit are small sculptures and box art created by participants during their summer camps.
